The Night It Rained

March 19, 2007

Without any warning, it began to rain. A few stray drops initially turning into a downpour. She sat silently watching the rain wash away the last of the memories they had made together. At a distance he was slowly inching away, increasing the distance between them every passing second. As the raindrops blew into his frame, with the strong gusts of wind that inevitably accompanied the monsoon showers, he increased his pace, searching for cover.

On reaching a bend in the road, he glanced back. She was still sitting, unmoving in the storm. For a moment he felt like going back and making her get out of the rain. Almost as an afterthought, he disappeared.

She was watching him all the time. Her head was turned in his direction as he disappeared round the bend. She wanted a last sightful of him. She knew she would never see him again. He would not stop until he was out of her reach…

It’s been three years now. And that was the last I ever saw of him… Some times I still think of that windy night and remember how from the center of my universe, he became just a faded memory…
